Understanding: “Believe that what others think matters; give them the chance to explain their perspectives and express their point of view: actively listen in order to understand them.” Donna Hicks PhD, Leading with Dignity: How to create a Culture that Brings Out the Best in people
We all have biases and when we recognize that fact it opens a whole new world. Biases are the enemies of dignity and especially understanding. When we form our thoughts and opinions about people based on what we see it closes the door to understanding. It interferes with listening and learning. It does not matter what that person says, or does we have already decided who they are by how they looked.
I have made it my mission as a nurse and as a person that I would get to know people. I wanted to understand them. I wanted to know their life experiences. It was important because I wanted to build a relationship whether it was for one hour or twenty years. When I decided to open my ears and close my mouth a whole new world opened for me. I became a better person and a better nurse. When you can do that, you can take your biases and push them to the back of your brain. Do not get me wrong, they are still there but their hold on you is less because you are making judgements on your interactions not your prejudices.
As a leader I wanted to know about my team and all the other teams that supported us in our journey to care for patients. Because I took the time to get to know our environmental service team, our transport team, and our radiology team I was able to create an atmosphere that supported teamwork and a sense of belonging. I would have never been able to do that if I continued to allow my biases to guide my interactions. I wanted to understand my teammates and I wanted them to know me. It is how I continue to work and how I continue to lead.
If I can say just one thing it would be to open your heart and mind to being more tolerant and understanding to those who are different than you and to those who might not share the same views as you. It will open a new world where you allow people the opportunity to know you and for you to know them.
