Today is my birthday. Over the last 20 years I have used my birthday as a time to evaluate my goals and the direction of my life. It is interesting how as we get older our goals and visions change. When I was in my twenties, I had goals that focused on my own success. When I entered my thirties and forties my success focused on raising my family. As I continued in my fifties to work to advance in my career my thoughts turned to working on how to help my children focus on their goals and dreams. Now here I am in my sixth decade, and my focus has turned to my health so that I can be around to watch my children become successful and enjoy being around my grandchildren.
Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is guaranteed to none of us. Only the present is what is promised to us. It doesn’t mean we do not plan, but it is important that we cherish the moments now as they are what are most precious. I have had friends and colleagues close to me that have lost loved ones. I have had losses in my life as well. It makes me sit back and think about the legacy I am creating for my children and grandchildren. I want to continue what my mother started.
I have health challenges that have required me to be on medication. But it has also required me to make lifestyle changes. I do this because I want to be around to help support the success of my family and maybe make a difference in someone’s life. I get up every morning at 4 am. I do my work out and get ready for work. I work more than one job, but I have always done that. I do it so that my family can have the things they need. It is not a burden for me. It is an honor to get up every day and know that I am able to do this for them. My brothers and I got that from our mother.
Today, I celebrate and remember the past year and all the joys and heartaches. Today I look forward to the celebrations and the opportunities to make a difference. I have been blessed with the opportunities I have been given, and I do not take them for granted. My imprint on this world will not be based on just my success but on the differences, I have made for others. It is what drives me and will continue to help me move forward.
