Before I begin this message, I want to say thank you to Anaelisa and my partners at Manos Unidas. Thank you for reminding me of the importance of community. You were the first to welcome me when I took on my role as DEI officer in August of 2022. Being part of the group meeting last night reminded me of my purpose. You always thank me, but I want to thank you for your support, your belief in me, and for your continued work in the community. You are the true heroes in my eyes.
As I sit here, I am thinking about the people in Los Angeles (The City of Angels). The loss and tragedy of the wildfires that has taken lives, stolen generations of memories, and wiped-out neighborhoods. You hear the stories, and you see the pain as people slowly return to what was once their home. I am here in Berkshire County over 2800 miles away, but the distance does not change the sorrow I feel for all those families. I cannot imagine or understand what they are feeling or going through. All I can do from here is to give to those organizations that are supporting them and pray for all those who have lost so much.
Within all this tragedy we see the thousands of people and organizations stepping up to help all those affected by these wildfires. People from all walks of life, from different backgrounds, and beliefs are putting their differences aside and joining forces to help those families in LA. It is a testament to the goodness in people.
I want to hold up all the first responders who while people were moving to safety, they were running into danger to try and save homes and people. They put their lives on the line every day to help others. I raise up EMS, the police, and the health care organizations that are treating the sick and injured while knowing that they too have lost so much. As a nurse I cannot even imagine what it must be like for them being in the middle of all the tragedy and devastation.
Today I will put aside all the things that cause me frustration. I will put aside the anxiety of what my work may bring. I will put aside for the moment the frustration of everyday life. I will take the next few moments to keep LA in my prayers.
To the people of LA in this time of sadness, devastation, and tragedy know that we are here for you during this dark time.
