Dignity: “Was Blind But Now I See”

There are times when I sit down in front of the computer, and I am challenged on what to say on Fridays. It happens from time to time that I do not know what to say that is a wonderful thing. It allows me to reflect on the past week and it gives me the opportunity to evaluate myself. We all need to take a moment occasionally, to look within ourselves and say, “This week was a great week” or “I could have done this better.” It is just a time to assess and rejuvenate.

I must admit my energy is low this week. As I move forward in my new role as Diversity Officer I have been out in the community, and I have talked to many people. It has been an eye-opening experience for me. First, in the challenges we face as a country and second, the amazing people who are out there making a difference every day.

Honoring Dignity allows us to open our eyes to what is happening around us. I have spent much of my time here in Berkshire County with my eyes closed. As a nurse I took care of patients from their admission date to their discharge date. I would often wonder what happens once they leave. I thought about it but never really put my thoughts into action. Well, since I have taken on my role as Diversity Officer, I am beginning to find the answers to what I always wondered.

Over the next few weeks, I will share with you in this post the challenges we face but also to share the amazing work that is being done to help those in need. My goal is not only to show you what we are facing but to tell you about the leaders in our communities who are facing the challenges at the frontlines. The commitment of these organizations and their people are what the principles of dignity represent.

“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”

“Not everybody can be famous, but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.”- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Have a great weekend and keep all those in Florida in your prayers and thoughts.

My Name is Charles Redd and I am a Registered Nurse and I have been committed to Honoring and Elevating Dignity ever since I read to amazing book written by Dr. Donna Hicks called "Leading with Dignity: How to Create a Culture that Brings out the Best in People" It is an excellent book especially if you are looking to change the culture of your team. I have witness this positive change not only in myself but in teams I have led. Back in July of 2020 I coined the phrase "Dignity Friday". I based it on the 10 Essentials of Dignity created by Dr. Hicks. I have share personal stories of my dignity journey and I have received great feedback. I hope what I share with you each Friday will help you as you continue your life's journey.
