Dignity: A Moment of Silence

“As my sufferings mounted, I soon realized that there were two ways in which I could respond to my situation — either to react with bitterness or seek to transform the suffering into a creative force. I decided to follow the latter course. – Martin Luther King Jr.

“I always wanted to be someone better the next day than I was the day before.”- Sidney Poitier

January 15th we will celebrate the life and birthday of one of our greatest heroes, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His words moved a nation and continue to do so even after his death. He was a Dignity Warrior and even though he is no longer with us his dream still lives on, his words still move us, and he still drives us to want to create a better future and be better people.

“There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

“Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

This week we lost not only one of our greatest actors but also a man who stood up for the rights of others. Sidney Poitier set the standard that allowed Black people to have a voice in Hollywood. I will not only remember him for his films but also for his grace, strength, and dignity. You will be missed.

“I was the only Black person on the set. It was unusual for me to be in a circumstance in which every move I made was tantamount to a representation of 18 million people.” – Sidney Poitier

“I never had an occasion to question color; therefore, I only saw myself as what I was… a human being.” – Sidney Poitier

“I am the me I choose to be.” – Sidney Poitier

“As a man, I’ve been representative of the values I hold dear. And the values I hold dear are carryovers from the lives of my parents.” – Sidney Poitier

There are no words I can add to what these great men have said.
